“The people who prefer to text senselessly then to have a verbal conversation,” types of people.

People, please stop with the foolery, as most should know that there is no true conversation with texting.  Texting should stay in its own lane, when time for quick contact, or emergency. Suddenly, the thought that real conversation and shared expression and emotions are thrown out the window, because most of us senselessly prefer engaging with fingers dictating their thoughts, is now being systematically used as an extension of nothing more than a robot.  Many have forgotten or perhaps were never introduced to what is known as true socializing with others. Steady texting never allows another to share the exchange of energy. Mainly texting for most is simply limited stifled communication.

Breaking it down: Texting Senselessly Over Having a Verbal Conversation

In an age where convenience dominates, texting has become the preferred mode of communication for many, often taking precedence over genuine verbal conversations. But is this shift toward text-based interaction serving us, or is it gradually eroding the fabric of genuine social engagement?

We see a growing disconnect, a widening chasm between meaningful exchanges of emotions and thoughts, now replaced by mechanical, emotionless tapping on screens. Let’s stop with the foolery—there is no actual conversation in senseless texting.

The Essence of Real Conversation:

Texting has its place. It’s excellent for quick exchanges, emergencies, or logistical communication. But when it becomes the primary mode of interaction, we lose something essential—our humanity. Conversations were once richness of shared energy, body language, and emotional depth (aka – EQ). In verbal exchanges, we don’t just hear words; we feel the weight behind them, observe facial expressions, and partake in a dance of social cues. However, in the era of constant texting, many have either forgotten or never learned how to socialize.

Steady texting, while convenient, restricts the flow of energy between individuals and often comes with dangerous consequences. Texting while driving or riding a bike, for instance, distracts attention from the road, which can lead to tragic accidents or loss of life. Even texting while walking diminishes a person’s awareness of their surroundings, increasing the likelihood of injuries or other hazards.

Furthermore, the screen is a barrier, preventing the authentic exchange of emotions and real-time reactions. Rather than engaging in meaningful dialogue, we now see people transforming into mechanical versions of themselves, driven by their devices. This limited form of communication becomes the standard, eroding the depth and richness of genuine human connection.

The Decline of Social Skills

One significant consequence of the texting culture is decreased social skills and awareness. Our ability to discern emotions, understand verbal and non-verbal cues, and engage in meaningful conversation rapidly diminishes. Emotional intelligence (EQ), a crucial element of human interaction, depends on our ability to manage emotions, communicate effectively, and understand others. However, texting strips away these essential components, reducing communication to mere lines on a screen.

It is essential to recognize that finger-typing does not inherently contribute to articulate, intelligent communication. The focus shifts from fostering meaningful interaction to simply learning how to type abbreviations and quick responses on a keyboard. While efficient, this form of communication fails to develop the more profound skill of long-term, thoughtful dialogue. Human thought, nuance, and emotional depth are lost through abbreviations and shorthand, common in texting culture. This hinders the proper balance between reflection and intentionality.

Additionally, in cases where learning to decipher messages is crucial—such as when people produce threats or harmful content through texting—it becomes essential that such behavior is monitored and, in many cases, reported to authorities. Tragedies across the globe have demonstrated the consequences of non-reporting in dangerous situations in recent years and with reported school shootings. We must become more vigilant in addressing these concerns to prevent future harm.

Emotional intelligence thrives on face-to-face interactions, where tone, body language, and context matter. It is jeopardized when reduced to text on a screen. The overreliance on shorthand, which minimizes the richness of language and thought, heightens this concern. While texting is efficient, it should not replace the deeper, more meaningful conversations that foster empathy, understanding, and emotional balance.

The challenge lies in balancing embracing technology and nurturing the core communication skills that define our humanity.

Texting often becomes an escape route for those lacking social confidence. Instead of honing their social skills in face-to-face interactions, people retreat to the safety of texting, where they can break off the conversation by simply not replying. There’s no closure, no resolution—just an awkward, unspoken ending. Isn’t this rude? It leaves the recipient hanging, unsure of whether the conversation is over. Worse, it creates a false sense of connection that is neither deep nor lasting.

The Problem with Pointless and Negative Texting:

Even more concerning is when texting becomes pointless—a way to waste time rather than engage in productive dialogue. When people text just for the sake of texting, without any meaningful intent, it leads to miscommunication and, at times, unnecessary conflict. The lack of clarity, emotional tone, and direct engagement can easily create misunderstandings that spiral out of control.

Messaging someone with harmful or unwanted content is equally damaging. Not only can it lead to confusion and conflicts, but it also creates emotional distress, even when unintended. Unsolicited or careless messages can profoundly affect the recipient’s emotional well-being and erode trust in communication. When individuals bombard others with such messaging, it distorts the conversation and damages the possibility of healthy dialogue.

Moreover, texting can open the door to harmful behaviors, especially on social media. When communication through platforms becomes toxic—bullying, harassment, and threatening behavior—the consequences are far-reaching. These acts are not only emotionally damaging but can also have legal repercussions. Bullying is not limited to terrorizing another’s platform, an individual, a group, or a community. Such actions are offensive and can be criminalized as a direct assault on an individual or entity (corporation). If anyone finds themselves at risk of emotional or physical harm through these platforms, action should be taken to ensure safety.

Emotional Intelligence in the Digital World:

We must recognize the importance of emotional intelligence in all forms of communication, digital or otherwise. EQ helps us navigate relationships by teaching us how to manage our emotions, understand others, and practice self-awareness. Texting, however, limits the growth of these essential skills. While skilled texters may be able to pick up on the tone of messages, genuine emotional understanding requires real interaction. Face-to-face conversations allow for a more profound exchange of emotions and ideas, leading to a deeper connection between individuals.

The Role of Social Media and Its Responsibilities:

Social media platforms can be a double-edged sword. While they provide an opportunity for connection, they also hold the potential for harm. Positive actions on social media—spreading kindness, supporting others, and building communities—can have a tremendous impact. However, negative behaviors—bullying, spreading harmful messages, and engaging in divisive communication—undermine the well-being of others and erode the quality of our interactions. Emotional intelligence is critical in managing how we engage with these platforms and the people we interact with.

A Growing Disconnection:

On a larger scale, this digital dependence on texting and messaging contributes to a growing sense of isolation. In the U.S. and globally, the rise in suicide rates reflects a society where disconnection and loneliness are rampant. The more we rely on digital means to build relationships, the more we lose touch with the human element—feeling heard, understood, and connected. Texting alone is not enough to build or sustain relationships, and without genuine conversations, people tend to feel invisible and neglected.

When looking at the alarming rise in suicide rates, the statistics are staggering. In the United States alone, more than 49,000 people died by suicide in 2022, which translates to one suicide every 11 minutes(CDC)(CDC:  https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts/data.html).

Globally, the number reaches around 703,000 deaths per year, making suicide one of the leading causes of death worldwide (

CDChttps://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts/data.html).

Breaking this down further:

  • In the U.S., Approximately one person dies by suicide every 11 minutes, leading to an average of about 132 suicides per day and more than 49,000 deaths per year (CDC: https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/facts

These numbers “weather” the urgency of addressing society’s growing disconnect. Without genuine human interaction, individuals may feel isolated, even if digital connections surround them. Texting and messaging, while convenient, cannot replace the richness of human conversation, where emotions and support are exchanged in real-time.

The medical community, including the CDC and mental health organizations, has identified multiple risk factors contributing to the rise in suicides, such as financial stress, social isolation, and mental health challenges like depression and anxiety (Med Xpress),(Home | USA Facts). Alarmingly, youth and vulnerable populations, such as LGBTQ+ individuals and people experiencing discrimination, are at a significantly higher risk(Home | USA Facts)

For those seeking help, resources such as the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline are available 24/7 to provide confidential support and guidance for those in crisis(CDC) and (Med Xpress).

By fostering honest, meaningful conversations, we can bridge this disconnect and support those struggling with feelings of loneliness or hopelessness.

Practical Tips to Strengthen Connection:

  • Friendships: Building meaningful friendships solely through texting will never allow you to know someone on a personal level. Genuine friendships require deeper interaction, face-to-face conversations, and shared experiences.
  • Networking: While quick texts or clicks may offer convenience, they don’t provide the depth needed to create meaningful professional relationships. In-person networking events stimulate richer discussions and make lasting impressions.
  • Human Bonding: Texting, as the primary mode of communication, prevents the warmth of human touch and bonding. There’s something irreplaceable about the exchange that happens in actual conversation—the warmth of a smile, the subtle nod, or the comfort of silence.

Conclusion:

Texting has its advantages, but it should never replace verbal communication. Human beings are wired for connection and can only truly achieve that connection through authentic, meaningful conversations. Let’s not forget the importance of engaging with each other on a deeper level—through conversations that allow us to share energy, emotions, and the unspoken nuances that build genuine relationships.

Author’s Keynote:

In today’s fast-paced, digital world, convenience often precedes connection. But we must remember that human interaction is invaluable. Texting may be manageable, but real conversation keeps us grounded, connected, and emotionally in tune. It’s time to stop the foolery and reclaim the art of genuine communication.

We should all take responsibility and become proactive reporting agents in this interconnected world of the Internet. The online space is vast, and when we witness acts of bullying, especially targeting individuals, hosts, or public entities that serve communities, we must speak up. Whether it’s cyberbullying, harassment, or any form of terrorizing behavior, it’s essential to stand up against these injustices. Let us be encouraged to reclaim our voices, advocate for what’s right, and rebel against actions that undermine humanity. Together, we can create a safer and more compassionate digital space.

Disclaimer:

This reflection emphasizes the importance of balance, not condemning texting. While texting serves its purpose, it should never substitute for real human interaction. Seek balance, cultivate emotional intelligence, and prioritize meaningful conversations in your everyday life.

How You Can Make a Difference:

Consider the impact of your communication choices. By opting for genuine conversations over digital exchanges, you can strengthen your relationships, boost your emotional intelligence, and help combat the growing disconnection many face today. Minor changes can lead to profound shifts in how we connect and engage with the world around us.

However, if texting and messaging have become an addiction that leads to harmful behaviors, such as terrorizing or bullying the community, it is crucial to seek appropriate help to address the issue. If this behavior escalates to actions that intentionally harm others—whether through harassment, intimidation, or threats—individuals should be reported or voluntarily self-report to the relevant authorities. They may also need to be registered as perpetrators of these harmful behaviors. Addressing these concerns early on can help prevent further harm and foster a safer, more supportive environment for the individual and the community.
